Chandler Fire Department seeks volunteers for neighborhood walk event on March 29 to promote water safety and drowning prevention
For the fourth year, Chandler firefighters are asking residents to join them in a door-to-door campaign through local neighborhoods to share a message they hope will help prevent water related tragedies in the community: Eye-to-Eye to Supervise. The goal is to educate residents about the importance of direct and constant adult supervision of children around water.
The Chandler Fire Department’s 2014 drowning prevention campaign will kick off on Saturday, March 29, when volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at Desert Oasis Aquatic Center; 1400 W. Summit Place.
At that time, Fire Department staff will assign small groups of volunteers a specific neighborhood and provide maps and other informational materials. Participants will then walk their assigned route and leave a printed message at every home. Each route will take 1-2 hours to complete.
The door hanger message asks adults to take personal responsibility for securing pools or other bodies of water at their home, supervising children in their care, and teaching them how to swim at the appropriate age. Learning how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is also an important step adults can take to better prepare themselves for any medical emergency.
Anyone who wishes to participate in the neighborhood walks should call 480-782-2141 prior to March 29. Volunteers must provide their own transportation to the neighborhood they are assigned. Children and youth under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.
Chandler Fire Chief Jeff Clark is once again appealing to all segments of the community to assist in this effort, including Scouting groups, religious congregations, businesses, service clubs and other organizations.
“Last year, like in past years, we received great public support for the drowning prevention campaign,” Chief Clark said. “Unfortunately, the community still experienced seven drowning incidents that resulted in at least one (adult) fatality. This year we intend to target our drowning prevention efforts in north Chandler, since many of the recent incidents occurred in this area of the City. If everyone can come together and support this campaign, I know we can prevent more tragedies. Please join us in our efforts to eliminate childhood drownings.”
Individuals or groups that cannot participate on March 29 but would still like to help are asked to call 480-782-2141. Chandler Fire Department staff will assign a neighborhood and provide the materials noted above. The volunteers can then walk that neighborhood at their convenience.
Residents may also see Chandler Firefighters out in the community throughout the months of March and April emphasizing pool safety and water awareness to Chandler residents at grocery stores, parks, schools, home owner association meetings, and during door-to-door visits.
